The Ultimate Fairy House Garden Birthday Party!

For Iris’ eighth birthday party this year, she decided to go with a Fairy Garden Party theme. The inspiration came from one of our local bike trails where there’s a little fairy scene that people keep adding to (including Iris). It’s a pretty cute idea so we decided to do the same thing for her party and make fairy houses. Now that Iris and her friends are a bit older, I’ve found that having a dedicated activity is helpful in keeping the kids occupied.

We scoured craft stores, Amazon, and our very own backyard for fairy house making supplies. One of the hardest parts about this party was knowing how much stuff we would need to make and decorate the houses, but I was able to find things like faux flowers, feathers, rocks, bags of fake moss, and glass jewels for pretty cheap. I also grabbed a bunch of plastic dishes from the dollar store so that everything had its own compartment. I got a lot of messages about this party on Instagram, so I went ahead and did a round-up of the party details below!

Fairy House Supplies
– Dirt (I used a fresh bag so that it was a little damp, allowing the props to stand up easily)
Plastic plant saucers (we filled these up prior to the party)
Small wooden houses
Tiny fences
Butterflies
Toadstools
Faux leaves
Sharpies for coloring & labeling the fairy houses
Glue Dots to keep the fairy house details in place
– And of course, fairies!

Party Favors
For the party favors the kids got to bring home their fairy house, but we also gave these cute fairy wands with a “Thank You Fairy Much” tag I downloaded from Etsy. We also had fairy wings for guests which I found at the dollar store (it’s helpful that Iris’ birthday is right before Halloween).

Party Decorations & Food
For the decorations, I grabbed some garlands and backdrop fringe at Target. I paired both of those with this cute fairy banner from Amazon. For the pinata, I had to look to eBay to find the toadstool.

For food, I opted for a simple cake and bought a custom fairy topper on Etsy. I also picked up some basic cupcakes from Walmart and added my own toppings. Glitter sprinkles on the white icing and white circles on the red icing to give a toadstool look. I also decided to order a grazing board from The Blonde Kitchen here in NW Arkansas. How cute are the toadstool Babybel cheeses?! The entire board was a hit and almost every bite was eaten. I also ordered custom cookies from our favorite Doss Haus Cookie Co. Aren’t they adorable? Of course, every one of these was eaten too. And I just couldn’t resist these toadstool paper plates to put it all on!

Party Fashion
As for Iris’ outfit, she wore this flower crown and this tulle party dress, and a special pair of wings from Hanna Andersson.

Now here are a few more photos from the party!

4th of July – Sam’s Club Style

This post is sponsored by Sam’s Club, but all opinions are my own.

Summer has always been my favorite season, even down here in Arkansas where the temperatures are hot and the humidity is thick. The days might be on the warmer side, but the pool water is cool and the lightning bugs at dusk make it all worthwhile. We love having folks over during the summer and the 4th of July is no exception. From our front yard swing, to the grill out back, there is nothing better than celebrating a holiday with some of your favorite people.

Stocking up on all of our 4th of July favorites at Sam’s Club, we are officially ready to celebrate. From burgers, to chips, to dessert – it’s a one-stop-shop for everything we need to have some fun in the sun with our friends (even our pool is from Sam’s Club! And we all know how quickly the cost of entertaining can add up, so that’s why we stick with Sam’s Club to get more bang for our buck. (Little known fact, I catered my own wedding and ordered all of my wedding flowers from Sam’s Club!)

Beyond burgers, we often grab steaks or sustainably sourced seafood, along with fresh produce (watermelon and sweet corn are our favorite summer staples) when we are preparing to host a get-together. And of course Iris doesn’t let us forget the sweet treats, like Member’s Mark super premium ice cream or gourmet cupcakes (can you believe I bought all of these cupcakes for under $8?).

Hope you all are having a lovely summer so far and are staying cool. Happy celebrating and happy 4th of July!

TRAVEL LOVE: Overland Park, KS

You know I love a good weekend road-trip, so when I got invited to check out Overland Park, Kansas I jumped at the chance. We make it up to Kansas City pretty often, but except for an occasional excursion to Deanna Rose, I’d never thought to explore Overland Park as my primary destination. Thanks to the kind folks at Visit Overland Park we got the lowdown on everywhere we needed to go. The only problem being that we couldn’t fit it all in one weekend! Typically Todd joins us on our trips, but he couldn’t make this one, so I thought it would be fun to bring my mom along. And I’m so glad I did – three generations of girls, on a family road-trip before the holidays to one of the best shopping destinations in this part of the country? Yes, please!

The first great thing about Overland Park is that it’s only a 3.5 hour drive from my front door. For the first time I did all the driving and it was easy-breezy – Didn’t even have to navigate through crazy Kansas City traffic! Checking Iris out of school just a tad early (she was super excited to hear her name called over the intercom), we arrived just before 5:00 on Friday evening. We got settled in our room at the Marriott Kansas Overland Park and, realizing we were all starving, made our way over to the Prairiefire area for dinner at Grimaldi’s Coal Brick-Oven Pizzaria. This cute little area looks brand new, but has such charm!

At the restaurant our server brought Iris a pan of pizza dough to play with while we waited for our food – absolutely genius. After eating the most delicious pizza, we wandered around and found a fun little toy shop called Fat Brain Toys. From there, we were picked up by the nicest driver, who surprised us with hot cocoa for our tour of Christmas lights around town. Back in our hotel room, we had another surprise waiting for us – s’mores cupcakes & popcorn courtesy of our new friends at the Marriott. All-in-all, the holiday lights and sweet treats were a perfect ending to our first night in Overland Park.

Officially in the holiday spirit, we woke up fairly early the next morning and went off in search of breakfast. Landing at McLain’s Market, a lovely coffee shop and food joint, we had breakfast bites, lattes, and chocolate milk to fuel our full day. But Iris could hardly wait for our next stop – the American Girl store, where her doll had a hair appointment scheduled. Oh, so fancy! They took such great care of her doll and Iris. It was so sweet to watch. We could have stayed there all day, drooling over all the accessories. Growing up I had the Samantha doll, so I felt myself revert back to my childhood – wanting it all (to share with Iris, of course). The American Girl store is located in the Oak Park Mall, so we took full advantage and did some shopping. It was near impossible to drag Iris away from the candy and Lego shops, but we finally managed.

So what’s my favorite thing to do on our trips? Eat and drink of course! Nearing lunch time, we made our way to Dave & Buster’s – a place I hadn’t been to in years. Basically like a grown-up Chuck E. Cheese, Iris had a blast and I had a DRINK. :) We hung out for a few hours, playing games, eating food, drinking drinks, and of course – Iris’ favorite part – picking out prizes. Needing a little rest from the fun, we headed back to our hotel before our last adventure of the day – the Luminary Walk at the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.

Once it got dark we made our way to the Luminary Walk. It was so magical with the Christmas lights woven throughout the gardens, pathways lined with candles, and little fairy houses hidden in the trees. There was hot cider for sale, fire pits for a quick warm-up, carolers, and even a gigantic gingerbread house. Wiped out from all the fun, Iris fell asleep on the way back to the hotel. After waking her up for a cozy dinner at our hotel, she got a second wind and had a little tea party with the goodies from The American Girl store.

Sunday morning came too soon, but we weren’t ready to hit the road just yet. Heading back to Prairiefire, we had brunch at Pinstripes, which features bowling, bocce ball, and of course food and drinks. This place wasn’t your standard bowling alley though. The atmosphere was elegant, but family-friendly and the buffet was top-notch. Iris not only got to see Santa, but she experienced her very first CHOCOLATE FOUNTAIN! I was most impressed with the Bloody Mary bar, but with the drive home I couldn’t quite partake. That said, if you live anywhere close (or if you go to Overland Park for a visit), I highly recommend Pinstripes’ Sunday brunch!

Back on the road, we made it home without so much as a pit-stop and even made it back in time for Iris to attend her friend’s birthday party. Living in Northwest Arkansas, I love that we live so close to so many awesome places – and now Overland Park is officially on my “weekend get-away” list!

William, Kate, & Brains

Okay, just because I’m pregnant doesn’t mean I can’t have fun. While I might not be the life of the party these days, I do try to get out every once in a while. One of the best parts? The whole no hangover thing. Hah. Here are some photos from a couple recent shindigs…

This Friday my friend Jill hosted a royal wedding watch party (DVRed of course – there was no way we were waking up at 4 am). She went all out with homemade scones, vintage tea cups, William & Kate decorations, fancy hats, and Cathy even brought a wedding cake!

These are from Brains’ birthday party, way back in March. This was the same week I had my first ultrasound, so at the party we told all of our friends that we were expecting. So, I’ll always remember that night – mustaches & all.

I made brains cupcakes for the birthday girl.

People have asked how she ended up with the nickname Brains, so now is a good time to explain. In college, the university usually gives email addresses with the first letter of you first name, and the first five letters of your last name. Back then, her name was Brandy Rains. So there ya have it!

Since usually I’m in bed by about 8 o’clock, my nights of fun are few and far between. I guess I should have a few more while I can, but pajamas & thinking of baby names rate pretty high up there with me right now.

Love being lazy.

Lazy bums.
