And now one of the cutest places in Oxford
is available on the ole world-wide.
My amazing friend Erin Abbott Kirkpatrick
just launched the website for her
adorable shop, Amelia.
And it’s just as cute & creative as she is.

If you ever find yourself in town,
you must stop by, have a cupcake,
& buy something cute!
In the meantime, check it out online.

Weekend Getaways

Just a quick post on how
I plan to spend the rest of my summer
– with many mini vacays!

A weekend in
Kansas City.
(celebrating the birthday of a friend)

Kansas City

A long weekend in
Memphis, Tennessee.
(a girls road trip to my hometown)

Memphis - Girl Trip!

And a getaway to
Las Vegas.
(an anniversary trip to the Red Rock Resort with my husband)

I’m just as excited about the photos
I plan on taking as I am about actually
visiting these places.

Watch for posts to follow…

Nineteen in Memphis

I didn’t fully appreciate my life at nineteen.
In Midtown. In Memphis.
Looking back, through a full decade
I can see the fun that was had.
Impressed I made it through
with very little damage.
Escaped with just a couple
etched black tattoos.
My proud little midtown scars.

Nineteen meant a duplex with
a best friend, instead of a mom.
Bike rides at midnight with
tall boys of beer
and boys of all kinds.

Lucero shows at the Hi-Tone.
Standing up front with
whiskey sours and sweaty girls.
Arms around each other,
swaying and singing like best friends forever.
For the night everything was perfect.
Tomorrow we’ll be back to talking shit.

So-called rock stars at the Deli
in town recording at Ardent or Easley.
From Kate Moss to Cooper Young.
Wondering what the hell they think
of no one thinking about them.

Working the opening shift
at Otherlands on Saturday mornings.
Half the staff still three-quarters drunk.
Slinging bagels, downing coffee and
Tom Petty sing-a-longs.
Word at the coffee grinder
was that you got extra tips
if you were extra mean.

Black and white checkered walkway
leading into the Map Room doors.
Bottled beer and no IDs.
Flaunting our fashion
without much thought at all.
Tank tops from A-Schwabs
before the words American and Apparel
ever sounded cool.
Silk screens on well worn t-shirts,
thrifted on Summer Ave.
And the ugliest shoes ever
bought from those coffee shop tips
at the Oak Court Mall.

Weekday afternoons
sifting through seven inches
at Last Chance Records.
Then thumbing through LPs
at Shangri-La.

Adventures to the old bridge,
draped over the Mississippi.
Everyone knew about the door
a little less than half way across.
A broken lock and a ladder leading down.
We’d wait till dark when
the scary climb was well worth the view.
Laying on our bellies,
head hanging over the side.
Nothing between our young faces
and the steel blocks of barges
gently pushing past the city lights.
We’d end the night running
to the Arkansas line and back
just to say we did.

Ten years later and I’m officially planted
on the other side of that bridge.
The view is just the same.
Lots of love,
but always a little better
when you’re looking back.

Record Breakers

When I was little
I use to fall asleep
flipping through
the 1987 version of the
Guinness Book of World Records.

Many of the records were awesome.
Others were ridiculous.
Oh, and some were just gross.
I was mesmerized by it all.

So when there was a chance to help out
in breaking a world record here in Fayetteville,
I had to be there.

The brave citizens of my town
were attempting to break the record
for world’s largest swim lesson
at the city pool in Wilson Park.

World Record Breakers

And with 262 people,
we did it!

I was a little apprehensive
of being in the pool with that many people
(that much pee).
Especially when part of the lesson
was to blow bubbles under water.

World Record Breakers

But as two of the oldest participants,
Brandy and I did our part.

World Record Breakers

Now, we are a part of
(random) history.

Just call us heros, badasses, whatever.

Summer Love

Maybe it’s the Memphis in me.
Maybe it’s the nights
in Mississippi & Arkansas too.
But I love summer.
Humidity, sweltering heat,
messy popsicles and all.

The abrupt southern switch of seasons,
always bringing back memories.

Lucero shows,
sweaty & drunk.
Green grass & beach towels,
hot flip flops to the side.
Day drinks,
always appropriate.
Sweet tea,
& BLTs.
Red shoulders,
turn to tan.
New freckles,
shining under sundress straps.
Random road trips,
with thrift store adventures.
Sneaking into swimming pools,
& liquor into Sonic cups.
Short skirts,
longer days.
Watering gardens,
summer beer in hand.
Late night walks,
amongst the slugs.
Front porches,
with fireworks & friends.

A few past photos
have captured my love.

Arkansas Thrifting Adventure

Starting today I’ll be capturing
this year’s summer adventures.
Girls are headed over this afternoon.

Highs in the upper 80s,
sunshine,
kiddie pool,
slip-n-slide,
orange slice jello shots
should do the trick.
New memories
to add to the list.
With tons of photos
to go along.

Stay tuned.
