9 Years Ago Today

I steal his socks. I leave cereal boxes open. I drop a trail of clothes and coffee cups behind me wherever I go.

He makes our bed every morning. He washes dishes after every meal. And he doesn’t even mind that all of his socks are missing.

Today, we’ve been married for nine years. It’s easy to get lost in the day-to-day, but I’m truly so grateful for him and this little life we’ve built together. I love looking back and seeing how far we’ve come together. Our house, our careers, our crazy kid.

Here are a few polaroids from our wedding, which I feel perfectly capture the hot, wonderful summer afternoon of August 11, 2007 at the Clinton House.

Art Feeds Day – September 8!

You guys have probably seen me post about one of my favorite organizations, Art Feeds. For those of you who haven’t, it’s a non-profit organization that feeds creative development and facilitates emotional expression in children nationwide – and in exactly one month it’s officially #ArtFeedsDay! A day all about helping children express themselves through art? I’m in and so is Iris. On September 8th, we’ll sport our Art Feeds shirts that we decorated ourselves, which to be honest was a party all in itself (I mean, do you see all those poof balls on Iris’ shirt?).

Want to get in on the fun? Order your shirt now so that you’ll have plenty of time to get creative with what Art Feeds for you.

Home Sweet Home

After five days away in Mexico, I’m back HOME with my little family! I stayed in the loveliest vacation home overlooking the ocean in Cabo San Lucas, eating, drinking, swimming, talking, and watching the entire season of Stranger Things. There were seven of us girls, all old friends from Arkansas, with many of us now living in other states. I am so happy to be home, but I am so grateful for such a wonderful trip with such wonderful friends. After I catch up on my rest I will go through all of my millions of photos and do a little recap post. Till then, I’m off to snuggle with Iris to make up for lost time.

Summer Getaway at The Chase Park Plaza

Earlier this year Todd and I talked about how there are so many places we want to go and how easy it has become to take Iris with us on our adventures. We decided that there were no more excuses and that we would travel to places on our list whenever we could. This past weekend we stayed true to that promise and took off on a St. Louis family vacation.

We were excited to stay at one of the most renowned properties in the area, The Chase Park Plaza. While we got out and explored St. Louis quite a bit, some of our best experiences were right there in the hotel. From the dining, to the historic movie theater, to our hotel room, to the Mediterranean-style pool, we fell in love instantly. In fact, as soon as we arrived, Iris took one look around the lobby and said, “I wish this was our home.” Me too, Iris. Me too. And when it was time to pack up and leave on Sunday, Iris kept saying she didn’t want to go. No one did.

We hit the road towards St. Louis bright and early on Friday morning so that we could get the most out of our stay. When we rolled into town, it wasn’t quite check-in time yet, so we stopped by one of St. Louis’ most famous breweries, Schlafly, and took a look (okay, and maybe a sip) around.

And finally, it was check-in time! If you know me, I love anything with vintage charm, but of course I love anything luxurious too – and The Chase Park Plaza was the best blend of both.

We made ourselves at home in our suite, which was the perfect set-up for traveling with kid. At night we could shut the door and Iris had her own space (and more importantly, we had ours). This helped it truly feel like vacation. We were also greeted by an enormous gift basket full of goodies from the hotel and other local companies. Soft Surroundings gifted me several things that Iris immediately tried to swipe (the La Chanson Ea de Parfum and the Pink Holiday Luxury Cream Lipstick were our faves). We also got a HUGE suitcase-shaped box of locally made potato chips from The Billy Goat Chip Company, a St. Louis t-shirt from STyLe, and movie tickets for the Chase Park Plaza Theater. Hashtag, spoiled.

Situated in the Central West End neighborhood and just across the street from Forest Park, the hotel’s location was supurb. There are restaurants and shops all right there within walking distance. So once we were settled, we decided to head to the St. Louis Zoo, which is just five minutes away from the hotel. Not only is the zoo completely free, but they serve alcohol (insert the sound of singing angels). Walking around looking at elephants and penguins while drinking a margarita? Sign me up!

Once we got back to the hotel, we cooled off with a special delivery of champagne and got ready for our first night’s dinner at The Chase Club, which overlooks the hotel pool. The atmosphere was relaxed, and the food was top notch.

After dinner (and dessert, duh) we took a stroll around the quaint neighborhood just as it started to get dark. There was live music at a sidewalk cafe, cute little shops, and a fountain that was near impossible to drag Iris away from.

The next morning we slept in as much as we could (8:30 a.m. is pretty late to us these days) and then ordered room service for a treat of breakfast in bed. Talk about the perfect start to the day.

One of our absolute favorite things to do in St. Louis is visit the City Museum. Pictures don’t do this place justice, but once you go – you just get it. I swear you could spend days exploring the little nooks and crannies of this place and still not discover everything. And the best part is that it’s just as much fun for adults as it is for kids – maybe more.

After a sweaty afternoon at the City Museum, we ventured over to another St. Louis brewery that Todd had been wanting to visit. Perennial Artisan Ales was a nice and cool spot to play a couple rounds of Candy Land with Iris while we tried a couple specialty beers (yes, this brewery had Candy Land – genius!).

After our long day, it was such a good feeling to come back “home” to The Chase Park Plaza. We sneaked in a short nap, then had a lovely finale dinner at The Preston. The food and cocktails were spectacular. They encourage you to share your plates, so that’s just what we did. Everything was delicious and unique, but they also had a great kids menu for those kiddos that aren’t quite as adventurous. Surprisingly though, Iris even ate some octopus! We started with a bread board, which included pretzel croissants and then the pastry chef came over to our table to make sure we were going to order dessert. Going all out, we ordered a couple options, including my fave: hot chocolate-chip cookies on a warm marble slab, with a sweet milk sauce to pour on top. I want to go back, like right now, just for those.

Even though we finished our dinner (and all of our desserts) after Iris’ bedtime, we broke all the rules and had a family movie night right there in our hotel. Iris thought it would be pretty cool that we could take an elevator ride straight down from our hotel room to the movie theater. We saw a late showing of The Secret Life of Animals before we hit the hay.

The next morning, before we said goodbye to our hotel room, we had breakfast in the Chase Club Lounge. Then, it was off to the pool! I had been eyeing this pool on their website long before we arrived, so it was a great final retreat before being in the car for five hours.

As we made the drive back home, I looked back through all the photos from over our getaway. So many new memories were made and I can’t wait to come back for more one day.

A very special ‘thank you’ to The Chase Park Plaza for hosting our stay. While this trip was sponsored, all opinions are my own.

I tried Jazzercise for 6 months and Here are the Results

Six months ago I did something I never thought I’d do – I joined Jazzercise. As mentioned back in March (just one month in), I was curious to see how I would feel about it at the six-month mark. Well, here I am and here’s how it went.

In order to really get a full understanding of how Jazzercise works and how it works for my body, I decided to set a personal goal to attend 100 classes before my 6-month contract was up. Despite several weeks of travel, being out for two weeks because of a pulled neck muscle (not Jazz-related), and being slowed down due to multiple colds, I’m proud to say – I met my goal! My 100th class was just this week and now the verdict is in:
I’m just as in love with Jazzercise as I was when I first started.

Taken on a celebratory (wine) walk after I completed my 100th class.

The Basics:
+ In a perfect world I go to about 5-6 classes a week. However, with a busy work schedule, lots of travel, and a kid who likes to bring me illnesses home from daycare, that certainly doesn’t always happen.

+ The sessions last for a full hour and include a warm-up and a cool-down. When I started I was surprised to discover that there are several different formats, which took me a while to fully understand. Now I know that Fusion incorporates more strength, while Dance Mixx features more cardio. All I bring to class each day is a huge bottle of water, as they have plenty of mats and weights to use.

+ Unless you pay for each class individually, you have to sign a contract and pay a sign-up fee. However, occasionally there are specials where they waive that fee or a have free, no-strings-attached month. The longer your contract is, the cheaper your plan is. More info can be found on my first post or directly from the source at Jazzercise.com.

Why I still love it:
+ It’s a one-stop-shop. I do Jazzercise for the same reason I subscribe to Blue Apron. I want to work out for the same reasons I want to eat well, but in the past all of the preparation and planning got in the way. Due to my crazy busy schedule, I don’t have time to master the week of perfect recipes the same way I don’t have time to seek out the perfect fitness routine on my own. With Jazzercise, I know I have a place that I can go every day and get handed a full, well-rounded workout. With cardio, strength, and stretching – it’s everything packaged up nice and neat in every class.

+ I admit I had preconceived ideas about what Jazzercise was before I tried it and it wasn’t necessarily favorable. Of course I assumed it was stuck in the 80s, but the soundtrack proved instantly that it’s not. Also, I immediately realized how much people really loved Jazzercise, so I wondered if there was some sort of incentive to share the excitement and get your friends to join. I was actually happy to learn that the fanfare is genuine. So if a girlfriend tries to get you to go, it’s most likely because she really thinks you’ll love it too. One exception to this is that I did once win a sweet Jazzercise water bottle during a special sign-up promotion, but I think you still get my point.

+ That brings me to one other thing I’ve earned – my very own Jazzercise beach towel. And yes, I mean earned and not won. Jazzercise holds periodic challenges throughout the year, where if you attend a certain number of classes during a set amount of time, you earn some special Jazz-merch. This was the first challenge I’ve accepted and, while the towel is great and all, it’s more about having a goal to work towards.

+ The workout creates such a positive feeling. As cheesy as it is, there’s something about the combination of music, pushing your body has hard as you can, and the encouragement of the instructors that leaves you feeling incredibly happy to be giving it your all. While some days I might think about going to the happy hour next door instead, I still look forward to it instead of the normal dread I have about other exercise. And by the way, according to their website, the average person sticks with Jazzercise for seven years. That’s a long time for a workout regimen.

+ Even after six months, it’s still just as much a mental work out as it is a physical one. Jazzercise does a good job shaking things up with new songs and routines just as soon as you think you know what you’re doing. This is still the only hour of my day where I’m totally focused on one thing and one thing only.

+ After my very first class, the instructor told me that it takes about a month to fully get it. She was right. I still have my off days and I still mess up during every song, but I don’t care and neither does anyone else. You’re made to feel comfortable and are reminded that this is your work out, so you can make it your own. And believe me, we all do.

What I’ve gotten out of it:
+ I went from not exercising at all to exercising 4 – 6 days a week. So, did I lose a bunch of weight? Not really, but that wasn’t my goal. I’ve always had a smaller frame and I tend to eat semi-well, so I started this journey to tone-up and to feel better overall. While I’m not perfect (who is?), I am more confident and I’m finally wearing clothes again that I hid in the back of my closet long ago. Shockingly, I even fit into my wedding dress recently, which took place nearly a decade ago.

+ I also gained the confidence to wear a bikini in public for the first time since before Iris was born. While I still often choose my one-piece, it’s amazing to have options you feel good about.

+ Beyond the outer benefits, I definitely feel better inside too. I fall asleep easier, I haven’t had a serious migraine since I started Jazzercise, and I have more energy. I also like knowing that Iris sees me taking time to care for my health and I hope it instills something in her too.

Will I continue?
+ My answer at this point? DUH! Right now Jazzercise just works for me. It works for my schedule, it works for my body, and it works for my mind. So right now my answer is a resounding YES! Will I be writing a year update? Two year update? Seven years? Only time will tell. Till then, see ya there?

PS – This is not at all a sponsored post. I just wanted to share my honest journey.
